Last weekend the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club hosted the Topper Ulster Championships 2014. Seventy Topper sailors travelled from North and South to the second regional event of the season.
Day one of the two day event saw the wind slowly filling in by 12 noon, allowing a very impressive fleet of Topper sailors to launch from the shores of Belfast Lough. By 3pm there was a perfect northerly breeze of twelve knots permitting the OD to complete three races. Maeve O’ Sullivan finished the day in a very solid 6th position overall. Eoghan O’Regan sailed two excellent races but an over eager start in the 3rd race meant he had to avail of his discard, putting him under pressure for the second day of racing.
Day two brought beautiful sunshine and a perfect 12 knots from the North. Maeve once again sailed remarkably well finishing 8th overall and 3rd U14. Eoghan rose to the challenge, held his nerve and sailed consistently well for 3 races placing him in a well-deserved position of 9th overall and 3rd U17.
Ronan Walsh finish just one place short of the top ten. Lucy Donworth and Molly Murphy also sailed very well, keeping all RCYC sailors in an impressive top third of the fleet.
Thank you to Tony Donworth who provided transport for the RCYC team and played an excellent role as team Dad for the weekend!
