The first leg of Trials took place this weekend at Howth Yacht Club. The Royal Cork was represented by 21 Sailors, all hoping to qualify for a place on an Irish Team for the European Championships and the French Nationals. Racing was held on Friday and Sunday with mixed conditions over both days. All racing was cancelled on Saturday as high winds gusted over 30 knots. In all 6 races were held over the weekend. Leading the way at the halfway point for the RCYC are James McCann and Harry Durcan with Cathal O’Regan, Chris Bateman, Sarah Cudmore, Caoimhe Foster, Patrick Daly, Tom Keal and James Spillane in pursuit. Our first time Trialists had a fantastic first leg and Kate D’Arcy, Emily Whittaker, Robert Keal , Killian O’Regan, Jennifer O’Shaughnessy, Aoife Byrne, Cian Jones, Paddy Cunnane, Juliet Nyhan, Conor Walsh, Conor Horgan and Mia Murphy can all be proud of their performances in challenging conditions.
The Optimist Youth Championships were also held in Howth this weekend. Leading the way for the Royal Cork was Cillian Foster with Ellie Cunnane, David Jones and Eoin Horgan all putting in fine performances in difficult conditions on Sunday.
Well done to all, it’s just the halfway point with the second leg being held in the Royal St, George next weekend.
