Optimist Trials 2014 concludes at the Royal St. George, Dun Laoghaire.

RCYC TRIALS 2014The second leg of the 2014 Optimist Trials concluded on Monday. The first leg of this year’s event took place in Howth Yacht Club with the second in The Royal St.George in Dun Laoghaire. In total the series consisted of 14 races with the final race on Monday being held in extremely challenging conditions of up to 23knots gusting higher combined with large waves.

All of our Sailors did extremely well in a very competitive and difficult competition. Our heartiest congratulations go to our Sailors who qualified to represent Ireland in the European Championships and the French Nationals. It is a huge honour to represent your country so congratulations to James McCann (2nd overall) and Sarah Cudmore for qualifying for the European Championships to be held in Dun Laoghaire in July and to Caoimhe Foster, Cathal O’Regan, Tom Keal and Chris Bateman for qualifying for the Team to represent Ireland at the French Nationals. Harry Durcan (3rd overall) opted to travel to Argentina in October to participate in the World Championships. We wish Harry every success as the only Irish representative at the Worlds. The event was won by Peter Fagan from Skerries.

Congratulations to all of our Trialists for doing themselves, their families and their club proud. I would like to commend their behaviour both on and off the water. Well done to Patrick Daly, Emily Whitaker, Jennifer O’Shaughnessy, Kate D’Arcy, Robert Keal, James Spillane, Paddy Cunnane, Juliet Nyhan, Aoife Byrne, Conor Walsh, Killian O’Regan, Mia Murphy, Conor Horgan and Cian Jones. For many of our kids this was their first Trials I’m sure the experience will stand to them in the future.

This year we ran a very successful coaching program led by Diego Blatt. This was attended primarily by RCYC members but was also opened to KYC members. Of 24 Ireland Team places available this year, 9 were filled by our training program. This can only be considered a great success so congratulations to all involved and with 13 first time Trialists this year we hope for continued growth and success in 2015. Congratulations also to the KYC members who took part in the coaching program. Michael Carroll gained a European Championships place, Sarah Levie and Micheal O’Sullivan a French Nationals place. Well done also to Amy Carroll, Sean Collins and David Carroll. A special thank you to Linda O’Keefe who put so much hard work into the training program.

So… Congratulations to all involved and we look forward to the Connaughts in 2 weeks time, the first qualifying regional event of the year.
