The annual Junior Laying Up Supper took place last Friday night with a large attendance of sailors and parents gathered to enjoy the annual class prizegiving and Pyewacket Tophy award night .
The evening was made particularly interesting with special guest speaker Dave Kenefick who kindly gave a most interesting presentation on his successful first season racing in France and the winning of the prestigious ‘Rookie of the Year’ award. Dave gave a great account of his adventure into French solo/doublehanded racing and hopefully inspired a few young sailors to follow in his footsteps. In appreciation of his successful first year and for taking the time to come down to the club to give a sense of his season to the Junior members he a presentation was made to David by Rear Admiral Dinghies Darren O’Keeffe on behalf of the Club .
The Optimist, Feva, Laser and newly arrived Topper classes presented their annual awards before Rear Admiral Dinghies Darren O’Keeffe also made presentations to Séafra Guilfoyle and Jill McGinley on behalf of the Club for their successes during 2013. Séafra had a tremendous season on the Laser circuit and topped off the year by winning the Junior Helmsman’s and followed that up soon after with a 2nd place in the Senior Helmsman’s. Jill qualified to represent Ireland in the 2013 ISAF 420 Worlds in Cyprus and competed with Clíodhna Ní Shuilleabháin of KYC.
The climax of the evening was the presentation of the Pyewacket Trophy. The standard of the sailors nominated was exceptional reflecting the massive depth of talent in the club. Those nominated were Harry Whitaker, Johnny and Harry Durcan, Cian Byrne and Séafra Guilfoyle.
Despite strong competition the Pyewacket Trophy was awarded to Séafra Guilfoyle for an incredible 3rd time.
The evening was most enjoyable and the club staff helped make the evening memorable. Thanks to Anne, Cian, Anthony and all the staff.
