The September League for Optimists started in splendid conditions yesterday. Sunshine and a gentle 8 to 10 knot breeze provided ideal conditions, particularly for the large number of improving sailors in the Copper fleet. Indeed the race officer, Nick Walsh, decided that the conditions were so good that he ran an extra race.

Waterford Harbour Sailing Club is delighted to host the three Irish Optimist National Championships from the 17th – 21st August. This is the biggest one-design sailing event in Ireland this year, with more than 200 Optimists arriving in Dunmore East for a week of competitive racing and a host of social activities on land. An international fleet of 150 boats will battle it out for the senior titles, while more than 50 will compete in the regatta fleet.
Entries from Finland, India, Bermuda, Spain, England and Scotland added to the Irish contingent, make this a truly cosmopolitan affair. Twenty local members will represent Waterford Harbour Sailing Club.
Fleets are arranged by age into Senior (13-15 years) and Junior (up to 12 years) plus a Regatta Fleet for less experienced sailors of any age. |

The European Optimist Championships 2010 took place at Kamian Pomorski in Northern Poland from the 2nd of July to 10th of July. Kamian Pomorski is an estuary connected to the Baltic Sea by a narrow channel.
The Irish Optimist Team consisting of four boys and three girls had an heroic and outstanding performance at the event. In particular, the boys team, en bloc, produced the best ever overall result for an Irish Optimist team at the Europeans. To put that achievement into it's deserving context, it should be noted that in the previous year, the best Irish result was a 50th position. At that time, that had been the best result of an Irish sailor for many years.

Daire Cournane continued his successful season by winning the Helsinki Regatta last weekend from a fleet of 100 other sailors from Finland, Germany, Russia and Denmark. He scored an impressive two bullets and two 4ths to take the title. The complete results are available here.
This was all the more remarkable because Daire is still a Junior (under 12). Daire has already won the four Junior Irish regional championships, hardly losing a race. |
