Ten young Optimist sailors from the Royal Cork have been selected to represent Ireland at the forthcoming European Championships in Poland and at the French National Championships in La Rochelle. Royal Cork Admiral, Paddy McGlade, was on hand to present them with mementos from the Club to mark their selection and to give a few words of praise for their achievements to date and give encouragement for their performances in these prestigious events. Robert Bateman was there to record the event in pictures.

Dave Dwyer in Marinerscove.ie has added yet another accolade to his ever increasing collection of awards with the announcement by Afloat.i.e/Irish Independent of his nomination as Sailor of the Month for June with his convincing retention of the RORC British Open IRC Championship title. This feat was only ever achieved once before by Justin Slawson’s Big Cheese in 2001.

The Optimist Ulster Championships took place at the weekend on the 26th and 27th of June at Ballyholme Yacht Club on the North East of Belfast Lough.
Patrick Crosbie took the Senior title with a solid performance on 12 points, in an event that was to have it's own share of drama coupled with a nail biting conclusion, when, even down to the last race, any one of a number of sailors were still in contention.
Daire Cournane of RCYC/KYC won his fourth provincial Junior title this season. It is understood that, subject to verification, he may be the first Junior sailor to have achieved this marvellous feat of winning all four provincial titles in the one season. He won the Ulster title with an extraordinary 6 bullets and in the process discarded a 1st.

As the tension was mounting at the start of the final day yesterday of the RORC IRC National Championship the international fleet from Belgium, France, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Ireland, Netherlands and South Africa were waiting to play out the final chapter of the championship.

Uí Loingsigh of Glanmire shorthanded wine race was a short, snappy and extremely enjoyable race in 12 knots of westerly breeze that saw plenty of excitement as it gave the competitors two spinnaker runs in a six leg race.
