Three sailors from RCYC Topper fleet travelled to Lough Erne, Co Fermanagh, last weekend to attend a one day training session given by Chris Penny (RYANI head Topper coach). This was followed by a Topper Traveller event.
Our sailors were joined by over thirty sailors from the North and South of the country. Molly Murphy, Maeve O’ Sullivan and Lia Berkery Kelly all launched in very windy conditions on Saturday, but soon mastered the conditions and showed impressive heavy weather boat handling skills.
Sunday proved to be a more favourable day for sailing, seeing all three races completed. Maeve, who only recently transitioned from the club Optimist fleet finished an excellent fourteenth and Molly only four places behind. Lia also held her own, gaining invaluable large fleet racing experience. A big thank you to Annamarie Murphy, who is looking good for this year’s award for Topper Team Mum!
On the fast approaching May bank holiday weekend RCYC will host a training clinic for the ISA National Topper squad, which will include four of our fleet members. The club will also provide Open Topper coaching this weekend, permitting large group racing each day.
Topper club coaching continues Sunday 10am to 1pm.
